OLM School Celebrates First Friday Mass with Installation of new Vice-Principal & Faculty

OLM School 8th Grade Altar Servers served the Mass.

East Greenwich, RI - Our Lady of Mercy School held its first First Friday Mass of the Holy Spirit for the new school year on Friday, September 6, at 9:00 am in the OLM Church.   With 8th graders serving as lectors, altar servers, and hosts, the Mass of the Holy Spirit also formally installed new and returning teachers and staff.  Father Bernard Healey also installed OLM’s new Vice Principal, Jennifer Ellis, who begins her first year in the new position. Concelebrating the Mass was St. Francis de Sales Pastor Father David Procaccini.   Following the Mass, 8th graders and school families gathered in the gym for a collation as they celebrated their final “First First Friday” as OLM students.  OLM students and staff gather for Mass weekly, as well as the First Friday of each month, marking a tradition in the Catholic church that dates back to the last decades of the 17th century, when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary and spoke to her of His Sacred Heart.

With a tradition of excellence in Catholic education since 1951, Our Lady of Mercy School supports its students as they strive to be the saints and scholars God calls them to be.  Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Pre-K through Grade 8, co-educational Catholic school located in East Greenwich, RI, offers its students the opportunity to pursue excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts in a nurturing environment built upon the teachings of the Catholic Church.

STATEMENT OF MOST. REV. RICHARD G. HENNING TO THE DIOCESE OF PROVIDENCE

Over the last two years, you may have noticed that I usually have something to say. I regret that, in this instance, I do not feel that I can find the words to express my sorrow in leaving the Church of Providence. In so many ways and moments, you have welcomed me into your churches, homes, and hearts. Your resilience in the face of challenges, your commitment to family and community, and your abiding faith in Jesus have lifted me and taught me. I am ever in your debt.

In particular, I would like to express my admiration for and gratitude to the priests of Providence. Your fraternal closeness gave me strength. I have relied upon your commitment to mission and your humor and joy.

When I arrived in Rhode Island, I spoke about my delight in the state motto and the fact that I would now live in a state of hope. Having now visited communities across Rhode Island, I say with great certainty that it is you, the people of this beautiful state - you are that hope! I will never cease to pray for you, and I hope for your prayers for me.
